The City of Suffolk recently held meetings with community stakeholders as part of a new Parks and Recreation Master Plan drafting.

TBA shared a vision for a better connected, safer city when it comes to active transportation, as well as providing residents with opportunities for better health through bicycling as part of their every day lives. Suffolk residents also had opportunities to comment at a public meeting held on Sep. 9th.

Each year the Salvation Army of Hampton Roads holds a "Christmas in July" event to raise awareness that the need is year-round. This year's event was held at the new Ray and Joan Kroc Center in Norfolk on July 19th.

Businesses such as Liberty Tax Service and area community organizations teamed up in acquiring and assembling bikes with the children receiving them.

In response to a request from the Salvation Army, TBA was honored to have donated 100 children's bicycle helmets in support of this year's event.

It is with great sadness that TBA must report the passing of Gerald Teeuwen on July 19th. He was a founding and lifetime member of TBA.

As patriarch of Tidewater's first family of bicycle racing, his contributions to cycling were many and significant. He did much to further the sport as an event organizer, race official, and coach, including serving as USCF District Cycling Rep from 1969 to 2000.

Gerald was also an active voice for making local infrastructure improvements for better bicycling in our region.

He will be greatly missed. TBA extends our heartfelt condolences to the Teeuwen family.

Earlier today TBA briefed the governing body of the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO) in support of the South Hampton Roads Trail (SHRT). The board is made up of all of the mayors, county board of supervisors chairs, local delegates, VDOT, HRT and local members of the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB).

In his remarks TBA president Bruce Drees noted the 13 miles of shovel ready rail-to-trail conversion in Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Suffolk, stating that "...it could be built today if funding were available."

Bruce also discussed the opportunities and economic benefits of a light rail with trail system in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, which would form the eastern end of the SHRT. Based upon a April 3rd fact finding trip to Charlotte, NC that TBA funded for officials from these two cities as well as HRTPO, he made note of $1.45B in new private investment that Charlotte has benefited from, of which the station access paths were significant components.

TBA is optimistic that through such appeals, we can get the South Hampton Roads Trail up and running sooner, making active transportation a viable option for many more of our residents than exists today.
